Nine-banded Armadillo

This ceramic sculpture is part of a series dedicated to animals that have evolved natural armour as a means of survival. Fascinated by the idea of a shield, I explored species that developed shields to defend themselves, yet whose greatest predator remains humankind.

I wanted to bring this sweet-natured species closer to the viewer. I strongly believe that emotional connection is linked awareness, and that awareness is essential to conservation.

This is a unique, one-of-a-kind sculpture. Two layers of underglaze were applied, and the piece was fired twice using different firing approaches to achieve depth, subtle tonal variation, and a tactile surface quality.
